Historical Lucca (78Km from Florence) in Tuscany that was founded by the Romans, is one of the very few towns in Italy to have preserved in their entirety the 16th century defense walls that surrounded this former capital of Tuscany. These walls define the town, and it is these walls that today form the backdrop each year in early September for the Murabilia or 'Wall of Flowers', Garden Show.

With the Botanical Gardens of Lucca acting as Patron, the annual garden show is a showcase for passionate botanical collecters and a delight for anyone who takes pleasure in plants, flowers and the garden in all its varied forms. There are highly specializes botanical collections of rare plants, the unusual, seeds, bulbs, equipment for the garden, pots garden antiques, crafts and more.

Over 14,000 visitors and 120 exhibitors attended the show in 2002, and the numbers rise each year.

How to find us

The Botanical Gardens are situated in the historical center of Lucca, between Door Elisa and Porta S. Peter, enclosed between the former convent of S. Micheletto and the splendid town-walls city building (XVI-XVII century.). It coveres approximately 2 hectares.

An overview of the Botanical Gardens

Entered through a wrought iron, there is a tree-lined avenue flanked by shrubs (an 'arboreto') that leads to a small lake. In the Northern part, there are the greenhouses and the library, which houses 2000 volumes with works and many historical manuscripts). The southern part is where various species vegetables from the lucchesi mountains are cultivated.

The collections

The 'Hortus Sanitatis' comprises a rich collection of more than 500 medicinal species These include aconito, angelica, the china, boldo, quassia, ginger and the Italian belladonna, mandragora, valeriana, etc...

In the two huge greenhouses are numerous cactus (Cactaceae) from the Americas and of African origin. It is also possible to view a remarkable collection of Ericaceae and the Theaceae (Camellia), in addition to medicial plants that are native to Tuscany.
